How to Prepare for a Fire Marshal Inspection.

Fire marshal inspections are a part of life, whether you own a restaurant, run an industrial enterprise, or manage an office. The more time and energy you devote to planning the visit, the less time and resources you will need afterward.
These are some procedures that every firm should take to guarantee that their inspection does not set off alarms or raise red lights.

 Clearing hallways and pathways

Begin by clearing the corridors and passageways. There should always be a clear path to the exit doors and windows. It is best to have many points of exit that staff, customers, patients, and others can use in an emergency.

The paths must be at least 36 inches wide, clearly marked, and lighted with emergency lighting. Always make sure the escape doors are clear and easy to open from the inside.

It’s also critical to ensure that all emergency pathway lights and exit signs are completely operational and have enough battery capacity to last at least 90 minutes in the case of a power outage.

If any bulbs burn out or the batteries fail, they should be changed right away.

Check Suppression Systems.

Fire suppression is crucial for giving your company time for first responders to arrive. This means you’ll need to ensure that all fire extinguishers and suppression systems are fully charged and operational. These should also be free of dirt and inventory, and professionally serviced by a competent technician.

If you have fire sprinklers, make sure there is enough clearance around the sprinkler heads and that no inventory or equipment is blocking the system. NFPA 25 demands at least 18″ clearance for compliance.

Because of their crucial relevance, fire marshals devote significant effort to checking these systems to assure compliance with fire rules. The more time you spend inspecting them, the less time you’ll have later to fix any flaws.

Inspect Control Panels.

Ensure that your fire alarm panels are fully operational. To meet fire rules, they must be professionally examined and serviced on a yearly basis. Pay special attention to any illuminated warning lights, and repair them as quickly as possible.

You should also verify inspection tags and documentation that certifies the tests and services done the previous year.

Check the electrical systems.

Check that sockets and breakers are not overloaded, and that all breaker boxes and electrical panels are unobstructed and easily accessible. You should also ensure that the correct extension cords, adapters, and so on are being used.

If you have any electrical problems, make sure they are resolved quickly and correctly by a certified electrician.

The best way to prepare for a fire marshal inspection is to have a professional check your business before they arrive.
